To Marcie, it's all about history and backstory. She is enthralled by the impact of a one person's story on history. This zeal finds Marcie unable to enjoy a biographical movie without researching it while watching. This quirk in her personality draws her into her passion for historical fiction.

However, she has written various genres: poetry, short stories, video scripts, and plays. One of her current projects is a YA historical fiction novel that brings to the light the sacrifice and service of WWII Merchant Mariners. And yes, there is a backstory to this project.

Marcie lives in her Nebraska home with her husband, Dean. They have five children and three beautiful granddaughters.

You will find her most days in her writing office sipping a steaming cup of Chock full o' nuts coffee. works. If not there, she is birding, gardening, or tackling her new venture into painting watercolor.

Fun Facts

Marcie is the oldest of twelve children.
She has experience in many different areas: podcaster, florist, rural mail carrier, all-girls hay crew, psychiatric technician, lavender farmer/soap maker, radio announcer, insurance salesperson, Christian bookstore clerk, and virtual assistant just to name a few.
Marcie co-wrote and produced a video Bible Study.
Marcie won best supporting actress in high school for her role as Mae Peterson. Her grey hair, hiking boots and fur coat made her unrecognizable to her younger siblings. :)
Christmas is Marcie's favorite holiday to write stories about, which is why she's written 3 Christmas programs: The Christmas Story Spectacular, Caroling Through His-Story, and The Gift of Trust.

A researcher at heart, Marcie Sextro bases her historical fiction off of first-person accounts of the US Merchant Mariners. She has interviewed several civilian veterans of the force and collects sailors' journals.

A Brief History of the US Merchant Mariners

Merchant Mariners date back to an unofficial beginning in 1775 when the Continental Congress issued Letters of Marquees to privateers to disrupt the British Navy's supply chain.

Officially, President Roosevelt, after using U.S. private ships to help Britain's depleted Royal Navy haul supplies before we ever entered WWII, saw the need for Merchant Mariners. He passed the Merchant Marine Act in 1936 and called upon private shipbuilders to build hundreds of \"Liberty Ships\" while calling upon the nation to man the new vessels.

Roosevelt's call was answered, and to this day, Merchant Mariners provide a steady supply chain between nations and within the U.S.

The Christmas Story Spectacular is a holiday musical set in a 1940s radio station, WXYZ. The annual \"Christmas Story Spectacular\" has started at the station, with local acts performing to celebrate the season. All is going well until a snowstorm prevents anyone from getting to the station. Hilarity ensues as the radio manager, and secretary begins pulling spectators from the audience to fill in the gaps. Caroling Through His-Story

Sandy's grandchildren are visiting for the holidays, so she decides to treat them to the annual Christmas pageant. When Sandy and her grandchildren, Maycee and Oliver, are seated by Sandy's neighbors, Bob and Grace, they discover that the pageant's program shares the history of each of the Christmas carols performed. Maycee is delighted because she just finished a report on the same topic. As they share their knowledge and wonder over the carol's history, they also are inspired by the Christmas story laced throughout the beloved carols, emphasizing the true joy of the season. As a kitten, I often felt out of place in my litter of five. All my siblings shared the same calico coloring as our mother, while I was plain yellow and white. I couldn’t help but feel different, like I didn’t quite belong.

“Darling, yellow tabby cats are like sunshine,” Mother reassured me. “They are very special. You will see.”

As we grew up, I found those words a great comfort, especially as each of my siblings showed their prowess on the farm while I struggled to even catch a mouse. After yet another failed attempt to corner a wily vermin, my mother sat me down.

Before the goose could respond, I picked up the dirt-covered herring and ran for the cabin.

Due to my superior agility and sense of direction, the trip didn’t take long. When I approached the cabin from the south, Anders was sitting in the chair outside, Clara in his lap.

“You’re back,” Clara said, licking her paws.

I dropped the fish at Anders’s feet.

“What’s this?” He picked up the fish. “A herring. So the girl is at a fishing village. I checked the ones to the north of Söderhamn. I didn’t realize there was anyone in the southern one. Well done, Tucker!” He patted my head. “Can you take me there tomorrow?”

I yipped my agreement, and Anders walked into the house, humming softly.

“So you kept up with the girl?” Clara said. “I was sure you would lose her in the woods.”

“Of course I kept up! The rough terrain drove me up and down like a fiddler’s elbow, but I am trained for reconnaissance. I found out where she lives and much more.

Pip

I hopped onto the branch and surveyed the area around the pile. Father’s warning about predators went off in my mind. Only ninety-two days old, I took his advice seriously and flew past the tray several times, but there was no movement. I went through Father’s checklist: cats, birds of prey, humans. None of those predators to be seen, I slowly flitted down to the tray.

It held a generous amount of pine, cypress, and fir seeds, along with juicy juniper berries. I began carrying them one by one to my new cache, a knothole high in a conifer tree.

After several trips, I stopped to nibble on a pine seed and, out of the corner of my eye, spotted a woodsman carrying an axe and a tin pail.

Grendela looked Anders up and down. “Do you think the cur is right that this Anders can help the girl?”

While the goose and dog bickered, a boat had come to shore.

I already knew that most North Swedish draft horses didn’t have a keeper like mine. Anders looked like all keepers in the north country—tall, light brown hair, and blue-eyed. But that was where his similarities ended. Anders knew that no horse was meant to be owned. We’re not like goats who give milk for drinking or chickens who lay eggs for eating. We work alongside the keeper as a partner of sorts, and if there is rhythm between the horse and his counterpart, the teamwork makes the workload lighter.

After hauling several logs to the cabin, I shook my long mane from my eyes and joined Tucker McGinty in watching Anders prop a log between two smaller stumps.
